About This Book
In the lap of the Mother
This very interesting and extremely readable Biography of H.H. Most Revered President Sri Swami Chidanandaji Maharaj, containing rare pictures of Worshipful Swamiji Maharaj even from his childhood, is now available after a lapse of nearly 23 years. The book was first printed and published at Kolkata (West Bengal) by the devotees of the Eastern Zone. They did this as a loving selfless service to the Headquarters at Shivanandanagar. They made it clear that All Rights are Reserved by The Divine Life Trust Society (Headquarters). Now, after more than two decades, the book has been printed at the Y.V.F.A. Press of the Ashram. Sadgurudev’s Delhi devotees have generously provided the necessary funds for its printing.
This book contains 240 pages, 35 photos, and spans a time-period of over 60 years of Parama Pujya Swamiji’s Life, right from Swamiji’s childhood.
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our, lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.

Humble Submission
The author presents this life-story as a votive offering at the lotus feet of Gurudev Sri Swami Chidananda Saraswati. He is deeply grateful to the compassionate Master without whose kind blessings he could not have brought the work to its present shape. It is only through the Master’s grace that this humble servant could venture to tackle the overwhelming task of capturing the myriad-sided, radiant effulgence of a grand divine life in the small compass of a volume such as this.
The author is grateful to Sri Swami Krishnanandaji, Sri Swami Venkatesanandaji, Sri Swami Pranavanandaji of Malaysia, Sri Swami Aseshananda, Mother Paula Cornely and Mother Yvonne Lebeau whose writings he has freely utilised in the present work. He owes a special measure of grateful thanks to Sri Swami Dhyanananda who inspired him to write this life-story by narrating some of his experiences with Swamiji.
The author is grateful to all the Purvashram relatives of Swamiji–particularly to the late Mother Gopi Bai of loving memory, Sri Venkat Rao, Sri Raghavendra Rao, Sri N. S. Rao, Dr. B. N. K. Sharma, Srimati Malati Bai, Srimati Padma Bai, Srimati Sudha Bai and Srimati Vatsala Bai–for supplying him information about the early life of the saint. They all belong to that great family which is distinguished and generous in more than one way. Their loving co-operation will ever be a cherished memory with the author.
Grateful thanks are due to Sri Devidas Girdharlal Chandarana, Sri V. R. Chakravarthi, Dr. Ramdas, Sri P. Chentsal Rao, Sri G. M. Manjunathayya, Sri Mizar Govind Pai, Sri K. Balkrishna Rao, Sri S. Shanmugam of Malaysia, Sri Swami Satchidananda and Brahmachari Karmananda of Trinidad, Mother Shivpremananda of Worishofen-Dorschhausen, Sri Hans Franke of Porz Eil, Sri N. Balachandran and Sri M. Sivarasa of Ceylon, Dr. V. S. Mani, Sri N.S.V. Row, Sri Subbaramayya Naidu, Sri H. D. Sharma, Srimati Gopalraj Urs, late Sri S. C. Deboji of loving memory, Sri D. C. Choudhury, Sri C. R. Mohanty, Sri C. S. Das, Sri H. H. Mahapatra, Sri Mahesh Tripathi, Sri Kiran Shankar Tripathi, Mother Kamala Chopra, Mother Savitri Nilakanthan and Mother Nirmala Natarajan who have provided various informations and some rare photographs, which have been utilised in the biography.
The author is deeply beholden to all the gracious Sadhaks of Sivanandashram–particularly to Sri Swami Vimalananda, Sri D. Nagarkar, Sri Narasimhulu, late Sri Ramanna Rai and Sri Ramaswarup–who furnished various informations and extended kind co-operation in more than one way. He is specially grateful to his Gurubhai Dr. M. S. Pati, who lovingly joined this servant of Gurudev in the holy service of composing the present work.
Sri Ram Niwas Gupta, the esteemed President of the Divine Life Society, Eastern Zone, and worthy son of the late Revered Sri Kashiram Gupta, has all along been a great source of encouragement to the author. But for his devotion and dedication, the present work could not have seen the light of the day so soon. The author expresses his heartfelt thanks and gratitude to this distinguished patron of the Divine Life Society.
The work belongs to the Holy Master Swami Chidananda, my revered preceptor. May he be gracious to accept it in his loving hands. This is my prayer and humble submission.
