We Are Supremely Blessed
by Sri Swami Chidananda

You are verily blessed and favoured that you have been chosen. Out of countless beings, only a few strive to attain a state of perfection which takes one beyond sorrow and which bestows eternal blessedness and supreme peace. To have come into such a Path is itself a great grace. You may be a Sannyasin, a householder, a businessman or a student, but if you have chosen to walk the path of goodness and righteousness, know that you are supremely blessed.

In this world of hatred, conflict, unrighteousness, dishonesty, warfare, old age, suffering and death, the Jivatma—having taken birth as a mortal, human individual, a physical, biological and psychological being—is suffering from the threefold afflictions: afflictions caused by natural forces beyond our control, afflictions caused by other forms of living beings, and afflictions created by us from within. From within and without, the individual soul embodied as a human individual upon this earth journey is subject to these three-fold afflictions.

Inner afflictions arise out of Raga-Dwesha and the six-fold enemies that are lingering in our own lower nature: desire, anger, greed, infatuated delusion and haughtiness which is intoxicated by ego, envy and jealousy. They are six inner negative trends which keep a person always in a state of restlessness and agitation and without peace. Thus subjected to inner and outer afflictions, the human individual wanders about in the waking state with no peace of mind. For this reason some people seek relief in sleep, and if they do not get sleep they are very much upset. Sleep is nature’s little mercy, a temporary withdrawal from the state of affliction.

In such a world which causes further restlessness by invading your mind through radio, TV, newspapers and gossip, you have been chosen to come into the path of righteousness that leads beyond sorrow, into peace and into supreme happiness. It is not a small grace; it is a great grace. It is not an ordinary blessing; it is a rare and extraordinary blessing. You are supremely fortunate, supremely blessed.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Walk in This Light
by Sri Swami Chidananda

Whenever Swamiji Maharaj was in residence at the Sivananda Ashram, he would come to the early morning meditation in the Samadhi Shrine and give a talk to the devotees assembled there. Those of us who were privileged enough to have been present at many of those talks know how powerful and inspiring they could be. But to be entirely accurate, we could not actually say that Swamiji gave ‘talks’ as such. It was more in the way of a sharing, an offering, a being together worshipfully in the presence of God and Gurudev. Swamiji did not speak about a subject so much as he communicated directly with people. Just what was needed was provided.

The talks from Swamiji that constitute the main body of this book took place for the most part in 1988 and 1989. It was obvious from reading through the talks while preparing the book that there was an overriding theme that keep coming up over and over again—that of light. Frequently Swamiji would make reference to the "light that is within" or "the light of lights beyond all darkness," and it was clear that this focus on light was not a casual or merely passing one, and it is for that reason that the title of the book, Walk in This Light, seemed most appropriate.

The book consists of fifty chapters divided into five sections, and each of the sections makes reference to some form of light or illumination: "This Awakening Light," "The Light of Lights Beyond all Darkness," "The Dawning of Knowledge," "Within You Shines the Ever-Present Reality," and "Illumined with Divine Wisdom." The chapters themselves are generally quite short and are thereby easy to read and assimilate, and one can read them repeatedly, each time gaining a new insight or angle of vision.

We, the editors, would like to thank all the wonderful and devoted people who served in bringing this book into being, but most of all we would like to thank Sri Swami Chidanandaji! We want to thank him most particularly for his life of service and teachings, a life which is being most joyously celebrated in this book.

DIVINE MYSTERIES: Sushila Vighnay, a doctor devotee, came to the Ashram in 1958.

In the course of her conversation with the Master, she expressed a doubt, “How is it, Swamiji, that I could have your Darshan in dreams even before I came to know of you? I try to understand the several inspiring experiences that I have had through your Grace, but fail in all my attempts.”

The Master said, “Don’t try to probe into these matters; do not attempt to clear these mysteries. They are all divine things. Experience and enjoy, but do not endeavour to unravel them. Your past spiritual practices and hard life are bearing their fruits. You are being rewarded.”

“Here and now we can enjoy the divine vision and experience, the divine peace and joy. We can be rooted in the Divine Light which is the quintessential Sadhana; we live in the awareness of the Divine that pervades all things. So, prayer should be backed by Purushartha to make the prayer one’s own experience. Both should go hand-in-hand. Prayer without Purushartha becomes empty. Purushartha without prayer becomes fruitless and futile. Both are necessary. A motor is necessary, but petrol is also necessary; a motor without petrol will be of no use, and petrol alone without a motor will be of no use. When both of them coordinate together, we have power and movement. Prayer is the life of the inner spiritual structure, and Sadhana is the outer mechanism of the spiritual life, and both coordinate together in oneness.” – Swami Chidananda
