The Three Governing Factors of Sadhana
by Sri Swami Sivananda

Many people even after studying classic works on religion and philosophy, do not know what they should do in practice to attain the goal of life, viz., God-realisation, and they seek enlightenment on this. The three things essential for God-realisation are: (1) constant remembrance of God, (2) cultivation of virtues and (3) spiritualisation of all activities.

  1. Constant remembrance of God: There may be breaks in the beginning, but by repeated practice, gradually you can have constant remembrance. Constant Nama-smarana, mental repetition of God’s Name, alone is possible for the vast majority of people. Awakening of Kundalini and raising of Brahmakara Vritti are very, very difficult, but when the mind is purified, they would come automatically.
  2. Cultivation of virtues: Of all virtues Ahimsa (non-injury), Satya (truthfulness) and Brahmacharya (celibacy) are the most important. If one is established in one virtue, all other virtues will cling to him. Watch the Vrittis. Introspect. Develop purity in thought, word and deed. In the beginning, practise at least physical purity. Then mental purity will come by itself.
  3. Spiritualisation of all activities: Feel you are an instrument in the Lord’s hands and that all the Indriyas (senses) belong to Him. Repeat the formula: "I am Thine; all is Thine; Thy Will be done." It is a beautiful formula for self-surrender. You may forget this formula and egoism may assert itself. But introspect again and again and find out your weakness. Try to be established in the feeling, "I am an instrument in the hands of the Lord." Remember the Gita verse:

SELF-SURRENDER

Yat karoshi yadasnasi yajjuhoshi dadasi yat;
Yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kurushva madarpanam.

(Whatever you do, or eat, or offer in sacrifice, or give, or practise as austerity, do it as an offering unto Me.)

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Bliss Divine
By Swami Sivananda

Today, in the world convulsed by wars and revolutions, there is a great necessity to revive the moral and spiritual value of ancient Indian culture and its everlasting idealism. If the human mind is to be weaned from materialism, if humanity is to be brought together, the only way is the practice of Yoga and Vedanta.

Yoga and Vedanta are basically the same. Vedanta is the sublime philosophy that gives a directive to the Yoga way of life.

Unconscious movement is called natural evolution. Conscious evolution is Yoga or the practice of religion.

Religion is not a matter of belonging to a church or of professing a creed. It is a matter of evolving a deeper insight and understanding and expressing it through life.

It is this insight and this understanding which the great Master Sivananda seeks to impart in the pages of BLISS DIVINE.

BLISS DIVINE is an immortal work, a legacy for ages to come. It is a spiritual classic. It is a Bible for the Christians, a Bhagavad-Gita for the Hindus, a Koran for the Muslims, a Zend-Avesta for the Parsis. It sums up the teachings of all scriptures of all ages.

Not only that; it offers comfort and consolation, enlightenment and elucidation, in a manner which makes a direct appeal to the modern mind. No line is vague. No explanation is hidden.

Optimism is the keynote of the book. Its pages abound in constructive suggestions for a fuller, happier life, right now, here on earth.

Each essay is self-contained and can be read apart from the rest of the book. The author has prefaced the book with a beautiful introduction, unsurpassed for depth of meaning and lucidity of presentation.

GUESTS FROM SOUTH AFRICA: In 1958, a group of South Africans met the Master. Speaking about the Divine Life Society branches in South Africa, they said that some European members showed keen interest in the progress of the Society’s work. They spoke in particular of a young European who had renounced everything and was serving the Society.

“He walks barefoot, shaves his head, wears simple dress and is serious about his Sadhana,” they told the Master.

“Why does he not write to me?” asked the Master. “I have never heard about him.”

“Swamiji, in South Africa we think that your Holiness is too high and that ordinary people like us should not write letters to you. So we dare not write to your Holiness.”

“I am not like that. You can freely write to me. I will reply and try to help you.”

The Master was pleased with the open-mindedness of the South African guests and their directness of dealing. He spoke again, “Do Europeans mix with the coloured people?”

“Very little.”

“Will they not come to any of your functions, like that of marriage?”

“Yes, they do come. Some of them are very good.”

“The heart is divine. There is no such thing as the ‘European heart’ or the ‘non-European heart’. Human nature is the same everywhere.”

“I am trying to voice the feelings of Sri Gurudev. Again, I try to hammer this idea into your minds that you should aspire to be Godmen and divine souls, and not merely business people or people interested only in transactions of give and take. If your idea is rooted in mere human and social relationship minus that integrating and inundating power of God, that would not be a proper respect paid to the great founder of The Divine Life Society.” – Swami Krishnananda
