The Glory of Renunciation
by Sri Swami Chidananda

This is a most sacred and auspicious day on which we have to bring before our mind’s eye the supreme ideal for which Bharatavarsha has stood right from the ancient Upanishadic times to the present day in the Atomic Age, viz., the ancient ideal of Sanyas, of a life of perfect detachment, renunciation and pure selfless love and service of all Jivas, seeing in the Jivas the full and direct manifestation of the Eternal Siva Himself. We have been observing for several years past the 1st of June as the day commemorating the stepping into Sanyas, by Sri Gurudev who is himself to us the most glorious and ideal exemplifier of what Sanyas in all its grandeur can be and has to be for every one of us. It is our great privilege to commence this function of the Sacred Sanyas Day of Gurudev by first of all mentally invoking the blessings of all the Great Satgurus of the past, and the Sanyasins of the present-day who have kept up the most glorious line effectively so that out of their strength and the blazing of Bharatavarsha’s inner culture, humanity may once again be saved from the unfortunate fate towards which it is heading, and once again peace and blessedness may be established upon earth.

What is the real spirit of Sanyas which alone, our ancients have declared, will enable us to attain the great goal of life, Self-realisation, the great aspiration of Bharatavarsha? Our ancients have declared: Na Karmana Na Prajayaa Dhanena Tyaagenaike Amritatwamaanashuh. By total absolute desirelessness, by total renunciation alone can the supreme goal be attained. Tyaga is the very life-breath of Sanyas.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Sri Swami Sivananda And His Mission
by Sri Swami Krishnananda

The Guru-disciple relationship is the most revered and intense of all relationships. During the years of concentrated study and training that a disciple undergoes under the guidance of his or her Guru, the highest Truth is imparted. Such was the relationship between Swami Krishnananda and his Guru, Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj, at whose feet Swamiji spent nineteen years studying and serving.

Swami Krishnananda arrived in the Ashram in May 1944 and was loved and cared for like a dearest son by Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj. Swamiji loved and worshipped Sri Gurudev as the Almighty walking on Earth in human form.

Though Swami Krishnananda gave individual talks about Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj on many occasions over the years, it was during Sadhana Week in 1985 that Swamiji gave a series of discourses entitled Sri Swami Sivananda and His Mission. With Swami Krishnananda’s usual holistic approach, the world circumstances that precipitated the incarnation of Sri Gurudev are discussed, followed by details of Gurudev’s early days in Rishikesh and the founding of The Divine Life Society.

May the blessings of both these great Masters, Gurudev Sri Swami Sivanandaji Maharaj and Worshipful Sri Swami Krishnanandaji Maharaj, be upon us always.

GOOD AND EVIL: The Master was referring to certain disciples and admiring their qualities. He said of them, “God seems to have a special laboratory to produce special types of people to work for me.”

He recalled a former inmate of bad conduct and said, “If there is no bad man, how can you call one a good man? Evil is necessary to distinguish the quality of goodness.”

“The spirit of sadhana in the Inner Path is more important than the outward form with which most people usually busy themselves. One spends the whole day in counting beads, and thinks that his sadhana is over with that. Another attends the temple, rings the bell and does some exercises, reads a few books, so that the hours of the day are all filled up, which is all enough to make him think that he is busy with his sadhana. Now, all this is the outward form which sadhana may take, and a very necessary form, and it is quite all right as far as it goes. It loses its meaning only when it is deprived of the spirit and the purpose with which it is expected to be done. It is to be remembered that sadhana is not any kind of bodily action that is outwardly demonstrated in the world, but a state of mind, a condition of thinking, a consciousness in which one lives.” – Swami Krishnananda
