The Heart of The Guru
by Sri Swami Chidananda

We are now approaching the great annual day of worship of those who bring light to dispel the darkness of spiritual ignorance in our interior, who take us from unrealities to the Reality, who enable us to go beyond the ever-recurring, revolving wheel of birth and death into that realm of everlasting, rebirthless life. The celebration of Guru Purnima pays homage to those beings, those great ones, who having reached that abode, having liberated themselves forever, have turned back and engaged themselves in illumining others, in liberating others.

What is in the heart of these great teachers? Why do they act and engage themselves in ceaseless work when they have no motivation for acting, having fulfilled all that has to be fulfilled? They have done everything that has to be done, attained everything that has to be attained. They have no more wishes, no more desires, no more wants, no more intentions, no more sankalpas.

They thus revel in a state of supreme satisfaction, contentment, for they know that there is nothing more for them to do. Their hearts are full; they desire nothing. And so, if the Lord were to place before them the bounty of all His countless millions of universes and say, "Take this," they will reply: "Keep them, for You have blessed me in a far greater manner. You have taken away from me the shackles of desire. You have graced me with the supreme gift of perfect desirelessness, perfect contentment, perfect fulfilment. What greater blessing can you offer me, O Lord?"

What could be the motivation for such beings to continue to act when there is no longer any need to act—when they have attained everything and are in a state of supreme plenitude and peace? What does the Indian spiritual genius have to say about the heart of these great ones? It says that if at all one could attribute to them any desire—if you want an explanation from your point of view—then you can say that they do have one thought, one intention, one desire, and that is that all sincere seeking souls who are in quest of the Goal Supreme may attain that goal, that they may be in the same state in which they are.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Sri Guru Gita
Translated by Sri Swami Narayanananda

In spite of much that has been told and written on the concept of the Spiritual Guru, still there exists a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding in the minds of many seeking souls.

This book "GURU GITA" with original verses and lucid commentary in English undoubtedly serves not only as a great boon to dispel at once the confusion and misunderstanding of all such sincere aspiring souls but also infuses in them unflinching faith and devotion towards their Guru which is the fundamental prerequisite for attaining the Supreme Bliss. Above all, the Real Nature of Sadguru, which is akin to the nature of the Supreme Being, is very beautifully depicted in this great book "Guru Gita" which unfailingly serves as a beacon light to all those sincere seekers who are already treading the spiritual path. "Guru Gita" forms the dialogue between Uma and Maheswara from Skanda Purana.

दुर्लभं त्रिषु लोकेषु तच्छृणुश्व वदाम्यहम्‌।
गुरुब्रह्म विना नान्यः सत्यं सत्यं वरानने॥ २१॥

durlabhaṁ triṣu lokeṣu tacchṛṇuśva vadāmyaham |
gurubrahma vinā nānyaḥ satyaṁ satyaṁ varānane || 21||

21. The Guru is Brahman and no other than Brahman Itself, O Parvati. I declare this Truth to you. Listen to my words and believe, for this Truth is unknown to any one else in all the three worlds.

Notes: Durlabham means "Rare". It refers to the declaration "Guru is Brahman". The Guru who is really qualified and who is capable of imparting the knowledge of Brahman is rare. He is attainable with difficulty and by the Grace of God particularly.

DON’T BE HASTY:Once the Ashramites were about to perform the last rites of an inmate, Ramananda by name, whom they declared dead.

The Master came on the scene and, seeing the calmness on the face, advised them, “Do not be hasty. First give artificial respiration and a couple of injections. Make sure that he is not merely in a swoon.”

Aspirants rushed here and there. Two persons rubbed Ramananda’s feet with liniment turpentine; two others administered artificial respiration. One Swami gave injections. The Master himself sat beside the body and rubbed the chest with the Hare Rama Kirtan.

When one of the persons giving artificial respiration let go the hand of Ramananda, it fell limp on the ground.

“All right, now say, ‘Krishna Bhagavan Ki Jai’!” said the Master, satisfied that everything possible had been done. He then permitted the Ashramites to go ahead with the last rites. He himself poured a vessel of Ganges water over the body with the Panchakshara Mantra.

"Discipleship is a golden key to blessedness if the disciple enables the guru to live and manifest through his personality and life. The light of the guru should shine through the disciple every moment of his living, wakeful life. Then, indeed, every moment the disciple will move forward and benefit himself. He will be the gainer and progress towards the great Goal. This is the truth about true discipleship—that one makes oneself a centre in and through which the guru manifests and shines." - Swami Chidananda
