Book Synopsis

The Bhagavadgita Explained
By Swami Sivananda

This book is a condensation of the entire position of the Bhagavadgita gospel. The Bhagavadgita is a gospel for humanity of all times, as a general directive to spiritual development and realisation. It is particularly of value to the present-day world which is anxiety-ridden and tension-torn in almost every walk of life. The Bhagavadgita is the answer of the Infinite to the calls of the finite. It reflects solutions not only to the conditions of man on earth but of situations in the universe as a whole. The Bhagavadgita is a textbook not of any religion but of religion as such, the voice of the higher consciousness which unfolds itself into the Absolute. In this production are involved the efforts of Sri Swami Yogaswarupanandaji, VicePresident of the The Divine Life Society.

TEST OF EVOLUTION: A disciple once asked the Master, "Gurudev, why have you collected all kinds of people here?"

"For your evolution," replied the Master. "How will you evolve? You will imagine that you have evolved, but unless you face all kinds of people and situations, how can you know that you have evolved? If in spite of everything that happens here, you can maintain a serene and balanced mind, it means that you have evolved, and not until then."

"In our personal way we should try to see that kindness to animals and working for their welfare is spread in every nook and corner of the land and especially all Grihasthas should try to inculcate this virtue in the hearts of children right from the earliest age. Children have no idea of pain or harm; and, therefore, they are wont to be seemingly cruel. But they do not know what they are doing. Parents should teach the children that they should not harm the creatures in the least. Headmasters and teachers, and all educational institutions, as far as possible, should try to inculcate this virtue in their wards. That is the most effective way of bringing about a generation imbued with this virtue, so that we may construct a world where human beings are filled with compassion." - Swami Chidananda
